The Season 1 finale of Daredevil: Born Again ended with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) gathering allies to take on the corrupt reign of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), as Fisk recently put New York City under martial law and outlawed vigilante activity. He’s going to have help from a familiar face, since Variety recently revealed that Krysten Ritter will be reprising her role as Jessica Jones for Season 2.
Ritter was excited to return, telling Variety: “It’s so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and The Defenders and now joining the MCU. I’m so excited to bring back this iconic character, and without giving too much away, there is much more in store for Jessica Jones. This is going to be an incredible season!” Ritter’s return also tees up the return of the original Defenders from Marvel’s Netflix shows, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones’ Dynamic Was One of the Best Parts of ‘The Defenders’
The Defenders was meant to be the culmination of Marvel’s partnership with Netflix, bringing together Matt Murdock, Charlie Cox, Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) together in a similar manner to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers franchise. But the miniseries received a mixed reception: fans and critics loved the interplay between the four heroes, but were less than enthused about the Hand being the villains or Danny’s presence in the story, which speaks volumes about how Iron Fist was handled. On top of that, what should have been a blockbuster binging event ended up being the least watched of Netflix’s Marvel series.
However, the one element that everyone loved was the dynamic between Jessica and Matt. From the moment Matt comes in to serve as Jessica’s attorney, her abrasive, standoffish nature provides the perfect contrast to his seemingly unflappable demeanor. A great example: When Matt finally suits up as Daredevil, Jessica snarks, “Nice ears,” to which the Man Without Fear replies, “They’re horns.” If Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 brings that energy to the table, it’ll definitely leave fans happy.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 Could Give Matt Murdock an Edge With the Defenders
Jessica Jones makes her return at the right time, as Season 1 ends with Fisk having an immense amount of power thanks to his mayoral office and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force he’s assembled. It also means that Daredevil Born Again is looking to Devil’s Reign by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto for inspiration during Season 2; that storyline saw Daredevil assembling, so to speak, an army of heroes to combat a law Fisk enacted that outlawed vigilantes. Having Jessica, Luke, and Danny on his side could turn the tide in Matt’s favor.
Jessica is super strong and can leap great distances, Luke’s skin is bulletproof, making him super strong and virtually invincible, and Danny, in addition to focusing his chi into an “iron fist”, is one of the most skilled martial artists in the Marvel Universe. That’s not even getting into the other heroes that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 could introduce, like Angela Ayala (Camilla Rodriguez) as the new White Tiger or Daredevil’s comic book partner Blindspot. Either way, the stage is set for the Defenders to reassemble.

There’s a Reason Why It Took So Long for the Netflix Heroes To Arrive in the MCU
Some fans might be wondering why it took so long for Krysten Ritter’s return as Jessica Jones, and the answer lies in legal paperwork. Similar to the tangled web of rights that surrounds Spider-Man, the Marvel Netflix series had a clause that prevented any characters in said series from appearing in another Marvel-based project for two years. So if you’re wondering why the Defenders didn’t join the final battle in Avengers: Endgame or Jessica Jones doesn’t have her canon friendship with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), the answer is rights. But the seeds for the Defenders’ return have slowly been planted, with Matt Murdock appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law while Wilson Fisk made his grand return in Hawkeye and Echo. Charlie Cox even hinted that there would be cameos from Defenders in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, and with Jessica Jones being confirmed, it’s probably safe to say she’s not the only one.
Jessica Jones’ return is a huge win for Daredevil: Born Again. Not only does it mean that Krysten Ritter gets to reprise a fan-favorite character, but it also ties the world of the Netflix series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe even tighter together. For once, it truly is all connected.
