The Two Jakes is a totally unnecessarily sequel until you actually watch it, at which point it becomes the answer to a question you only half-heard asked. Long after the events of Chinatown, Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson, who also directed) gets caught in a complicated case involving a client (Harvey Keitel) who may have used him as a cover for a premeditated murder. In the course of his investigation, Gittes discovers a connection to his own past. A troubled production that became an infamous flop, The Two Jakes, written by original Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne, is a beautifully melancholic tale about the perils of living in the past. The final line of Chinatown is iconic, but the final line of The Two Jakes — “It never goes away” — is arguably even more haunting.

This chewy, fruity candy was a staple in stores all through the 1980s. It was best known for its series of strange commercials, featuring a dowdy bespectacled woman commenting on various misconceptions about Bonkers (it’s not gum!) while giant fruits fell from the sky, usually onto her family members. Very strange stuff — and so is the fact that Bonkers were quite popular all throughout the decade, but then lost so much market share that production ceased entirely just a few years later. The most common Bonkers flavors included grape, strawberry, and my personal favorite, watermelon, which made clever use of the candy’s two-color design, with a green exterior and a chewy red interior.
