Laura Dekker’s 518 days at sea offer CEOs a practical playbook for performing under pressure: prepare relentlessly, rehearse failure, simplify what matters and lead with calm when conditions turn rough.
At 14, most teenagers are finding their place in the world. Laura Dekker decided to sail around it.
Born while her parents were travelling by boat, she began sailing at six and spent years navigating currents, shipping lanes and dangerous sea conditions. In August 2010, she departed aboard Guppy to circumnavigate the globe alone. Starting in Gibraltar, she completed the journey 518 days later, aged 16, becoming the youngest person to achieve the incredible feat. A court battle had delayed her departure and ignited an international argument about age, risk and capability. Yet Laura possessed something many critics overlooked: deep experience earned through years of deliberate practice.
What really resonated when I spoke to her was not simply the vastness of her extraordinary adventure. It was the surprisingly practical system below the surface: prepare relentlessly, imagine failure before it arrives, simplify what matters and remain compassionate when others are looking to you for confidence.
Preparation is what remains when you’re moving on empty.
Laura shared that she once went days without sleep. In those rough conditions, solid judgement cannot depend on feeling fresh, inspired or heroic.
“The most important thing is still the preparation that you’ve done,” she explained. “You know exactly what to do in different scenarios.” With enough repetition, routine actions, especially when exhausted became “second nature.” Even when something went wrong, she had already played through the possibilities in her head.
She spent around a year organizing Guppy with her father, Dick. More importantly, she knew the boat intimately. “Having touched and tightened every bolt yourself, makes a huge difference when the s**t hits the fan.” Her confidence was not positive thinking. It was deep evidence that she could understand problems, make repairs and keep sailing forward.
That lesson carries naturally into business. A review by The National Library of Medicine of various studies involving 2,276 participants found that sleep deprivation regularly impaired decision making. Preparation cannot eliminate fatigue, but it can reduce the number of decisions people must invent under pressure.
In business it’s vital to identify the decisions your team may need to make during a crisis moment. Rehearse them before the crisis docks. Build checklists for critical tasks, clarify decision rights and make important responses familiar enough that people are not starting from zero on their worst day.
Do not predict the storm, but practice meeting it.
As a child, Laura’s father would suddenly announce, “Your rudder is broken. What are you going to do?” Or he might remove the imaginary safety net another way, for example, the engine has failed in the harbour, the GPS has stopped working or the next maneuver must be completed without the expected tools.
“From a very young age, I’ve been trained to think in what ifs,” she said. Before a crossing, she mentally travels through the entire journey, including the arrival and docking. She adds, “The future never unfolds exactly as expected, but the discipline of thinking through what could happen builds the adaptability needed when it does.”
That preparation proved invaluable in the Torres Strait, on the Northern tip of Australia’s Cape York Peninsula, when her front sail ripped apart at night, dangerously close to reefs and shipping traffic. The natural reaction would have been frantic action. Instead, she paused. “Even though I didn’t have a lot of time, I did sit down and go through the options I had.” She lowered the damaged sail, selected another and continued.
This captures the real purpose of scenario planning in the corporate world. It is not about guessing the future correctly. MIT Sloan Management Review argues that exploring multiple scenarios allows leaders to test whether strategies remain seaworthy across very different futures, while preparing for threats and opportunities that conventional forecasting may miss.
When the waters turn rough, sometimes the fastest move is to pause.
Her crisis rhythm is on point: “First step is pause, breathe, make sure I’m calm.” She then asks what must happen first, acts on that priority and waits again before determining the next move. “It just comes down to letting everything else go” and focusing on the immediate problem.
This matters because urgency can create an illusion that speed means success. Research published by Ahead Solutions on sleep loss shows that tired people can shift away from cognitively complex information and rely more heavily on readily available cues. In difficult moments, the first answer to appear can feel compelling without being wise.
It’s therefore essential in business to build your pause ritual. One breath. Three questions: What is happening? What matters most now? What could my first action unintentionally make worse? Ten seconds of disciplined thought can prevent weeks of avoidable recovery.
Build simpler systems and more human leadership.
Laura applies the same clarity to the boat itself. “I’m a huge fan of simplicity. My thinking is the more we have, the more can break.” She prioritizes hull integrity, the rudder, sails, rigging and anchoring before navigation technology. Amazingly, she can also navigate using a sextant and the stars. As she puts it, “I can’t navigate if I don’t have a boat.”
Business systems have a habit of drifting in the opposite direction. Tools, interfaces and dependencies accumulate until few people fully understand how the whole system will behave under stress. The consequences can be significant. Case in point in 2016, a power outage and related computer problems at Delta Air Lines contributed to 2,300 flight cancellations over three days and an estimated $150 million reduction in pretax profits.
But simplicity is not only about equipment. It also shapes how a captain leads. When conditions deteriorate, people need clarity and confidence, not unnecessary complexity or bravado. Laura believes a captain must project enough confidence to steady thew crew while still having someone trusted with whom uncertainty can be discussed. Compassion matters too. “I don’t generally like captains that are pretending that they are much better than everybody else,” she said. People contribute more when they feel their leader “actually care.”
The business lesson is to simplify critical operations, test the backups and remain close enough to frontline work to see where failure could begin. At the same time, create the human conditions for resilience. People perform better when leaders combine calm confidence, honest vulnerability and visible care.
The voyage was never just the achievement.
Perhaps Laura Dekker’s deepest insight came when I asked what came from such a remarkable achievement.
The voyage, she said, “wasn’t really what was defining me.” Instead, it provided “the building blocks that I needed to become me.” Sailing solo for 518 days forced her to confront her mistakes, boundaries and capabilities without excuses. “When you’re alone, you run into yourself a lot. It’s incredibly humbling.”
Great challenges do not merely reveal character. They build it, often quietly. The question is whether we treat difficult experiences as trophies to display, setbacks to escape or material from which a wiser version of ourselves can be constructed.
