AfterSuper Mario Galaxyviewing number two, here are all the parts I’m still hung up on. But what do I know? Maybemoviesdon’t need to make sense if they’ve got Nintendo Easter eggs and cameos. The film begins with Bowser Jr. kidnapping Rosalina, because her power can fuel a cannon he built that will destroy the universe. (Don’t ask me what he plans to do after he destroys the universe. Not exist any longer, I guess? Maybe he has extra lives, because this is a video game.)
Rosalina’s captured with one of her “children,” a gaggle of colored star-shaped blobs known as Lumas. No sooner has Bowser Jr. shoved Rosalina into his machine than this yellow Luma escapes and then finds its way to the Mushroom Kingdom, where it crash lands and asks for Princess Peach’s help in rescuing its mother.
It’s a classic setup for this sort of children’s adventure film. But typically the character that begs the heroes for help would join them on their quest, providing helpful exposition about why they need rescue and how they managed to find them.
None of that is included in the film. In fact, after the yellow star asks Peach for help it completely disappears from the narrative. It transforms into a Launch Star to send Peach and Toad on their way and is never seen or heard from again. So I guess it sacrificed its own life for the good of the mission? Feels like that might be worth acknowledging for at least a couple seconds?

“The Encounter” is an uncomfortable episode to watch, even by Twilight Zone standards. It was so uncomfortable, filled with such unpleasant racial violence and postwar guilt, that the episode was pulled from syndication after it first aired in 1964 — the only Twilight Zone episode to ever suffer this fate. The thing about “The Encounter,” though, is that it’s quite a good episode, exploring as it does American and Japanese anxieties directly after World War II. In the episode, a white American and a young Japanese man (played by George Takei) get stuck inside an attic haunted by a cursed katana that exacerbates their strained relationship, both men grappling with their own shame and anger left over from the war. The white man’s constant string of derogatory racial language and the negative depictions of both characters led CBS to shelve the episode after viewers complained.
