Technically, Disney’s Fantasia was never meant to be seen in its original format forever. Walt Disney originally wanted the studio to regularly update Fantasia with new segments set to different pieces of classical music so that they could keep showing new versions of the movie, which meant that there may have come a time when the original version simply didn’t exist. World War II scrapped those plans. Nevertheless, the film has been altered in the ensuing years: a few shots of Sunflower, one of the centaurettes from “The Pastoral Symphony” segment, were removed in the 1960s due to harmful racist stereotyping; and the voice of Deems Taylor, the famous composer who narrated the film as the master of ceremonies, was replaced with that of longtime Disney voice actor Corey Burton after Taylor’s recordings had deteriorated to the point they were unusable.
