Spielberg’s first big-screen feature seems calculated to build on the reputation he had earned with his early standout TV film Duel as a clever choreographer of car action. It follows a woman (Goldie Hawn) who busts her husband (William Atherton) out of prison so they can retrieve their son from a foster home. A slow-motion chase across the state of Texas ensues, along with some of Spielberg’s funniest moments and a very effective finale.
