The franchise launched in May 25, 1977 when ‘Star Wars’, written and directed by George Lucas, was first released in theaters. It was followed by ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ closing out the original franchise. Sixteen years after the last of those films hit theaters, a new prequel trilogy began with the release of ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’. It was followed by ‘Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’. In 2012, Lucas sold the rights to the ‘Star Wars’ franchise to Disney who announced a new, sequel trilogy. The first film, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, was directed by J.J. Abrams and opened in theaters in 2015. The next, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ is directed by Rian Johnson and opens in the winter of 2017. The ‘Star Wars’ films have made over $7.5 billion at the box-office, making it one of the highest-grossing film series of all-time.”,”post_count”:2072,”link_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/star-wars/”,”feed_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/star-wars/feed/”,”term_taxonomy_id”:469,”object_id”:0}],”categories”:[{“id”:1,”slug”:”movie-news”,”title”:”Movie News”,”description”:””,”parent”:0,”post_count”:32087,”link_url”:”//screencrush.com/category/movie-news/”,”feed_url”:”//screencrush.com/category/movie-news/feed/”,”term_taxonomy_id”:1,”object_id”:0},{“id”:771,”slug”:”video”,”title”:”Videos”,”description”:””,”parent”:0,”post_count”:11703,”link_url”:”//screencrush.com/category/video/”,”feed_url”:”//screencrush.com/category/video/feed/”,”term_taxonomy_id”:777,”object_id”:0}],”authors”:[{“id”:607977,”slug”:”screencrushstaff”,”name”:”ScreenCrush Staff”,”first_name”:”ScreenCrush”,”last_name”:”Staff”,”nickname”:”screencrushstaff”,”description”:”ScreenCrush. Ask anybody who the villain ofStar Wars: Attack of the Clones is and they’ll tell you: It’s Count Dooku, played by the late, great Christopher Lee. And sure, Dooku is this scheming former Jedi, and he fights Obi-Wan and Anakin at the end of the film, and he chops off Anakin’s hand, and he dresses in black, and he generally seems like a pretty bad dude.

Universally beloved TV shows aren’t always universally beloved from episode one.

Perhaps one of the most famous examples of a beloved classic that almost ended right after it began was M*A*S*H, the medical sitcom set inside a U.S. Army mobile surgical hospital during the Korean War. Nowadays, it’s considered one of the best TV shows ever made, an entertaining weekly comedy that found ways to smartly comment on current affairs, but the outlook wasn’t always so rosy. The ratings for the first season were so bad, many cast members at the wrap party assumed they were all saying goodbye. But re-runs proved that M*A*S*H had an audience, and fans showed up in droves after CBS greenlit a second season. The rest is history.
