‘Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan Reflects on His ’Sons of Anarchy’ Exit After Just 2 Seasons

Before establishing himself as the media mogul we recognize today, Taylor Sheridan appeared in various TV and film roles, including the FX crime drama Sons of Anarchy. Created by Kurt Sutter, the series aired from September 3, 2008, to December 9, 2014, spanning seven seasons and cultivating a dedicated fan base. However, it wasn’t until Season 3 that the series began garnering massive viewership, becoming one of the highest-rated series in FX’s history. Even as of last December, Disney announced that Sons of Anarchy was among the shows to surpass 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ in 2025.

For the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy, Sheridan portrayed Deputy Chief David Hale, the squeaky-clean second-in-command to Wayne Unser (Dayton Callie), the chief of the Charming Police Department. His exit in the Season 3 premiere, which he recently reflected on in an interview, came after a tense real-life contract dispute in which he chose to walk away from the hit FX series after being offered an unfair wage compared to his castmates. The prominent producer made about $10,000 per episode (on a 13-episode show) at the time, which wasn’t enough to “pay my rent and live,” so he had to work more than one job.

So after Season 2 of Sons of Anarchy, the Yellowstone creator informed Sutter he would leave if his pay wasn’t raised. He, however, clarified that he wasn’t demanding the same salary as the show’s established stars, like Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, and Ron Perlman, made. The producers then offered him $15,000 per episode, but at a guarantee of 10 episodes. “I do the math on it, and I said, ‘That’s not a raise. What is that?'” Sheridan recalled. “And I said, ‘No.'” This led an exec to tell his attorney he could be recast “tomorrow,” thereby suggesting he was “imminently replaceable.”

The professional snub ultimately proved to be a massive blessing in disguise for Sheridan. Realizing he was not valued in the business, he began writing and eventually built the successful Yellowstone TV franchise, which has produced four popular spin-offs. The main series aired for five seasons on Paramount Network from June 20, 2018, to December 15, 2024, and is regarded as one of the best Westerns in modern TV.
