When Netflix announced it was reviving beloved cult sitcom Arrested Development for another season, fans were understandably hyped. Though its time on TV was short, the original three seasons of the show ended on a high note, so things could only get better from there, right? When the Netflix-produced fourth season actually came out, though, viewers found it perplexing more than anything else. What does the high concept Rashomon-esque storytelling (every episode takes place over the same stretch of time but following a different character) actually add to a show like Arrested Development? The season was so badly received that Netflix released a “remixed” version that recut the fourth season into a more regular storyline concurrent with the release of the fifth season, but by the time the fifth came out, no one trusted that Netflix knew how to do the show justice. Compared to how great the show had been in its heyday, the later attempts couldn’t measure up.

At the end of Hal Ashby’s dramedy Being There, Peter Sellers’ simple-minded gardener Chance, who has been unwittingly masquerading as political mastermind “Chauncey Gardinier,” leaves the funeral of the powerful elderly man he’s been staying with and strolls through the wintry garden of his estate. In the final shot, he steps out onto the lake, walking across the surface of the water. Barring the possibility of Chance having had magic powers this whole time (unlikely), the ending of the movie is a mystery. Is his physics-defying feat a symbol of his rise to political godhood? Or is it something subtler, a reference to his blissful ignorance of how the world around him is “supposed” to work? Chance has no idea that walking on water is impossible. If you don’t know what you can’t do, you can do whatever you want.
