One of the most iconic liminal spaces aesthetically speaking — aside from the sickly, yellow fluorescent-lit Backrooms, with their corporate decay and repetitive, endless corridors — is the vision of static suburban sprawl. Considering Jim Carrey’s Truman Burbank lives, unbeknownst to him, in a completely controlled, artificial town inside a large set, one might say most of The Truman Show is a liminal space film. But one scene in particular is considered one of the most iconic liminal moments in cinema. Toward the end of the film, when Truman, escaping on his boat, literally sails into the end of the world — a giant wall painted to look like a blue sky — he encounters a set of stairs leading to an isolated door, seemingly suspended in the air. That door is the gateway to a vast beyond; a much larger, stranger place than the world Truman has ever known: reality.
