Flawed, complex characters and anti-heroes are staples of cinema. Audiences love to root for a protagonist who is complicated and imperfect — or even a little evil — so long as they’ve got the motive and charisma to back up their misbehavior.

Let’s look at Mean Girls’Cady Heron, for instance. The formerly home-schooled teenage heroine of the 2004 teen comedy is highly relatable, and certainly not a capital-B bad person, but her character arc involves her not-so-nice descent into the very same mean behavior that the 2000s cult classic pokes fun at. She becomes so horrible at one point in the film that it seems the only friend she has left is us — the audience.

Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) certainly earns his title as the “dumber” part of the duo at the center of 1994 cult comedy Dumb and Dumber. But he’s also pretty awful outside of his own absurd stupidity. For one, his thoughtless behavior constantly results in others getting injured. He’s not always very nice to his pal Harry (Jeff Daniels) either, even secretly putting laxatives in his best friend’s coffee. He’s also convinced he’s in love with Mary, a woman whose briefcase he’s fallen into possession of, even though they don’t actually know each other, and he practically ends up stalking her in his quest to win her affection. His worst offense though? Conning a blind child into buying a dead bird. That’s just messed up.

These lines, and their deliveries, are so cringey we kind of have to love them.

FromTroll 2 (1990)
It’s easy to pick on movies that are already bad for lists like this, but we couldn’t make a cringe-yet-iconic collection of wild bits of dialogue without including one of the best worst lines ever written. Even if you haven’t seen Troll 2, you probably already know this line, and its bizarre delivery, from just being online — that’s how good-bad it is. When doomed Arnold (Darren Ewing) witnesses a girl drinking a potion that liquefies her body into vegetable goop for a troupe of goblins to slurp up, he describes what’s going on in a sort of stream-of-consciousness way: “They’re eating her! [Pause.] And then they’re going to eat me! [Longer pause.] Oh my gooooooooood!!” The line is bad, the delivery is worse, there’s a fly on the actor’s face for half of it, but ultimately you have to cut this guy some slack. They were eating her. And they are planning to eat him next. (Oh my gooooood!!!)
