No one was really waiting with bated breath for a sequel to 1977’s The Rescuers, a charming but not exactly canonical adventure flick released in the middle of Disney’s middling Bronze Age. But 1990’s The Rescuers Down Under is that rare film that isn’t just as good as its predecessor—it’s in an entirely different league. The film follows a pair of rescue agents who just so happen to be mice, who set out to save a young boy who’s been kidnapped by a dangerous poacher in the vast Outback.

Featuring soaring flying scenes that could give Toothless and Hiccup a run for their money, an immersive Aussie wilderness backdrop, and brightly animated characters, it’s a shame the somewhat obscure film was bookended by two iconic Disney animation juggernauts — The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast — but it’s nonetheless lovingly remembered by many VHS-addicted ’90s kids today.
