As we trade in our trendy white tank tops for warmer layers to keep us cozy on chilly days, we’re keeping an eye out for the best sweaters on the market, fromchunky knits to turtlenecks. One style in particular is a fall staple (and obsession): the cardigan.
The button-front sweater has been a longtime transitional-weather go-to, but it started making headlines a few years ago, when micro versions dominated New York Fashion Week. As you can imagine, fashion enthusiasts and celebs ate it up — and they’re still excited by them. Brands are finding ways to make them feel fresh: At the Fall/Winter 2025 shows (and the most recent Spring/Summer 2026 shows), the likes of Coach, Lingua Franca, Kate Barton, and Tanner Fletcher used sweaters and cardigans as styling hacks — throwing them over shoulders, around waists, and through bag handles, offering easy access as the weather changes throughout the day.
