UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the world to make 2025 a “new beginning,” emphasizing the need for collective action to address pressing global challenges. In his New Year’s message issued on Monday, Guterres reflected on the difficulties of 2024, highlighting the widespread impact of wars, displacement, and rising inequalities that have deepened divisions and mistrust.
He pointed out that the past decade has officially been the hottest on record, with all 10 of the warmest years occurring within this period. Describing the situation as “climate breakdown in real-time,” Guterres stressed the urgency of dramatically cutting emissions in 2025 and accelerating the transition to renewable energy. He described these actions as both essential and achievable, warning that the world must “exit this road to ruin” immediately.
Despite the challenges, Guterres expressed optimism, noting that he has witnessed hope driving change, even during difficult times. He praised activists of all generations for their efforts to push for progress and commended humanitarian workers for their commitment to supporting vulnerable populations. He also expressed admiration for developing nations advocating for financial and climate justice and for scientists and innovators who are pioneering solutions to global problems.
Guterres highlighted the Pact for the Future, adopted by UN Member States in September, as a critical framework to advance peace through disarmament and conflict prevention. The pact also includes priorities such as reforming the global financial system, expanding opportunities for women and youth, and ensuring that technology prioritizes human rights over profit and prevents harm caused by “runaway algorithms.”
He emphasized the importance of adhering to the values enshrined in human rights, international law, and the UN Charter, noting that these principles should guide efforts to build a more equitable and peaceful world.
As he looked ahead to 2025, Guterres acknowledged the uncertainty of what the future holds but pledged to stand alongside those working toward a more stable, equal, and healthy world for all. He called on nations to unite, rather than divide, in the shared mission to create a better future.
“Together, we can make 2025 a new beginning,” he declared, expressing hope for global solidarity in the face of mounting challenges.
