From the Top Down: Why CEO Strength Shapes Company Culture

A positive company culture is one of the most important assets in the competitive and fast-changing business world. This organizational culture influences how employees interact, perform, make decisions, and reach goals. For all of this to be met, a CEO plays an important role in building and maintaining this positive culture.

Given their position, a CEO has the option to either create a healthy work environment or unfortunately lead a company down a negative path. To avoid any unwanted results, leadership coaching represents a great way for CEOs to improve their skills.

How CEOs Influence Company Culture

A CEO is more than just a strategist or a manager, they are someone who sets the tone of the work environment and the overall company. Company culture is directly influenced by the way the CEO behaves and interacts with others, which is exactly why a CEO must have clear communication skills, empathy, and respect for others. These are just some values that influence employees at different levels, including efficiency and productivity, as well as teamwork.

Take Satya Nadella for example, the CEO of Microsoft. Before he took over the company in 2014, Microsoft’s culture was competitive and rigid. Nadella introduced the idea of a “growth mindset” which changed the whole flow of the company. The idea was that the employees were encouraged to learn and grow without having a fear of failure. This shift was exactly what Microsoft needed as its company culture became more innovative and collaborative. Teamwork makes the dream work after all.

Another worthy mention is the former CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz. His company culture focused on responsibility, respect, and inclusivity. Howard’s goal was to focus on employee well-being, which is what ultimately led them to become one of the most famous global brands. This is proof that reaching business goals means focusing on company culture as the first step.

How Leadership Coaching Helps CEOs Lead Better

While some people are natural-born leaders, others need a bit of a boost, which is where leadership coaching comes in to save the day.

Leadership coaching is a great tool for CEOs looking to polish up their leadership skills including communication, decision-making, and problem-solving. With the help of a coach, CEOs can easily spot areas that need some work. These are just some of the benefits of leadership coaching:

1. Better Decision-Making: CEOs often face difficult choices that can affect the company’s success. This is why it’s important to work on making smart and strategic decisions that align with company goals.
2. Better Communication: Having strong communication skills is important for CEOs. They have the task of clearly communicating company goals to employees and other partners. With great communication skills, CEOs better motivate their team, which improves productivity and deadline meetings.
3. Adaptability: With leadership coaching, CEOs can learn how to keep up with constant business industry changes. They need to be able to quickly adapt any strategy based on the current market changes, this way they can lead their teams more efficiently.
4. Building Empathy: Great business leaders understand and care about how their employees are feeling. They care about creating a healthy workplace, which drives innovation and productivity where employees feel valued and motivated.

CEOs Who Changed Company Culture

Now that we have all these benefits laid out, let’s see who was successful in keeping a positive company culture with the help of leadership coaching. The CEO of Airbnb, Brian Chesky, faced a major challenge in the Covid pandemic. The company suffered because of it, but Brian used this time to invest in business coaching and sečf-reflection to rethink the company’s mission. His focus was on transparency and long-term success, which we can say that he achieved successfully, as Airbnb is now a go-to platform for booking any holiday getaway.

Another worthy mention is the CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, who had a great challenge posed in front of him when he took over the company as CEO. His challenge was to keep Google’s positive company culture while the company continued to expand and grow. He focused on creating a work environment based on openness and teamwork. He also emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. He was successful at this because Google continued to grow and is now where it is.

Conclusion: The Strategic Value of Leadership Coaching

After this run down, it is clear that a CEO has a far greater role than just leading a team of employees. CEOs have to constantly juggle business changes and numerous decisions. This can get a bit overwhelming, so asking a business coach for help is no short of a great idea.

With the help of a business coach, CEOs polish up their decision-making skills, communication skills and boost the overall productivity of their team, while fostering a healthy and positive work environment. Sound like a win-win situation if you ask us.
