Though Pascal would not watch the scene, he was very open in discussing it, explaining why it was not something he wished to see after the emotional toll filming the exchange took. While the personal connection Pascal has with the character and this scene, in particular, gives him a different perspective on the moment, the emotion behind it is really what made the scene so impactful.
Pascal refers to filming this scene as “one of the hardest and easiest days of work” he’s ever had. They took an entire day to film the exchange, and within the context of the story, it was emotionally draining. After watching these strangers become each other’s family, fans are understandably attached to the relationship, so when Joel confesses the truth about what happened at the end of Season 1 and Ellie reacts with anger, it’s tough to watch. Still, Pascal recalls giving the scene everything he had, describing being “emptied out” at the end of it, and really, who wants to relive that kind of day?

While the scene from the character’s perspective was emotionally charged, it was even more so for Pascal, who was able to draw on his own situation to fuel Joel’s feelings. Those things just broke my heart.” Clearly, Pascal wore his heart on his sleeve while filming the porch scene, so watching it would be another emotional experience, and no one can blame him for avoiding that during an interview.
It Makes Sense Why Pedro Pascal Refuses To Watch This Scene From ‘The Last of Us’
Pascal has a lot to say about the emotional experience of filming the porch scene, but his reason for not wanting to watch it goes beyond a reluctance to relive those feelings. The scene became deeply personal for Pascal, with him saying it opened “all the channels” in his heart. “That’s how it felt.
