While it might be hard to believe now that The Avengers is one of the biggest brands in all of popular culture, things got so dire for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the 1990s that Marvel desperately tried a series of shakeups to the property in an attempt to juice interest and sales. One of the sweatiest was a storyline called “The Crossing,” which introduced several new (quickly forgotten) characters, like the very ’90s-ish Deathcry, and turned the Wasp into a bug lady rather than a normal woman who shrinks. Worst of all, the story revealed Iron Man had been a sleeper agent for Kang (yep, that Kang) for years. The rest of the Avengers were so desperate to stop this evil Tony Stark after he went on a murder spree that they traveled back in time and recruited a teenage Tony Stark to help them beat his older self. After the older Tony Stark died, teen Tony stayed in the present as the new Iron Man. Then a few months later all of this stuff was wiped out of continuity (and with good cause!) and basically never mentioned again.
