Until Dawn follows a group of college friends who get trapped in a time loop of supernatural horror (and brutal deaths) while looking for one member’s missing sister. Outside of that straightforward premise, the film unravels in a tangle of messy plot lines, confusing revelations and nearly nonexistent character development. Actress Ji-young Yoo’s quirky self-professed psychic is the only bright spot in an otherwise pretty unlikeable group of characters, while fun creature designs tease what the movie could have been if the writing had been as tight and clever as something like The Cabin in the Woods. Bitterly putting aside that the movie adaptation of Until Dawn has very little to do with its excellent, highly atmospheric 2015 survival video game predecessor, this 2025 haunted house clunker runs out of time before it can leave an impression.

Disney did such an effective job of making Snow White look like it wasn’t a musical that I had no idea it was one until I sat down in the theater with my daughter and the characters started bursting into song. Ironically, the music was one of this live-action remake’s better elements, and I even sort of enjoyed Gal Gadot as the very evil Evil Queen. But the CGI Seven Dwarfs in this Snow White were downright unreal and bizarre — especially Dopey, who looks like he was designed by an AI given the prompt “what would Alfred E Neuman look like as a Chad.” Everything involving those characters, and all of the awkward changes designed to make Snow White a more active heroine (even though she still needs to take a long snooze in the third act because this is a remake, after all), dragged an otherwise good-looking, good-sounding movie down.
