The biggest movie of the year in the U.S. (and the fourth biggest movie worldwide at the time of this writing) was A Minecraft Movie. Was it because it was the funniest movie or the most exciting movie or the most visually inventive movie? No. It was because it became a thing on social media to go and ironically yell at the screen. Admittedly, A Minecraft Movie was not a total disaster, and as video game adaptations go that basically makes it the Casablanca of this genre. But so many superior films fared so much worse at the box office this year, in part because they weren’t fun to yell at, and the more I think about that, the more depressed I get.

The Broadway Melody has a reputation as one of the worst and most forgettable winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture. Which certainly explains how it wound up as the lowest-scoring title of the 1920s. It’s assuredly not the worst film released in the decade — but its among the most-watched from the ’20s in modern times, because people love to watch all the Oscar Best Picture winners.
