Within each genre you sort the titles according to your individual rating, by overallpopularity, or by the average rating from all users — which gives you the top-rated film according to Letterboxd in all 19 different genres. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Today we’re just going to find out the single best movie (or at least the highest-rated movie) in each of the 19 individual Letterboxd genres. As you’ll see, some movies appear multiple times; one appearsthreetimes. That’s because some movies exist within multiple genres — likeThe Blues Brothers, which is an action movieanda musical. I could have excluded previously mentioned movies in the interest of getting a broader range of titles, but I decided that would just be fudging the truth. Better to give an accurate reflection of the films that Letterboxd users hold most dear in all of their 19 different genres. And here they are…

Average Letterboxd Rating: 4.69
Masaki Kobayashi’s Harakiri is the top-rated narrative film on all of Letterboxd, so it’s going to rank as the top-rated film in any genre it qualifies as. That includes action, as this brutal Japanese revenge tale involves a fair amount of swordplay. This movie, which is available on the Criterion Collection, will appear again on this list…

When the cliffhanger finale becomes the series finale, nobody’s happy. This was the case with ALF, that charming 1980s sitcom about a suburban family harboring a goofy friendly alien. When it came time to close out the show’s fourth season, ALF aired an episode that sure felt like a goodbye — up until the last seconds, when the title character, who was about to join fellow members of his species in a new colony, is kidnapped by agents of the government and spirited away. When a “To Be Continued” card flashed onscreen, audiences (and the show’s creator) thought that surely ALF would be back for Season 5, but the show was canceled instead, trapping Gordon Shumway forever in the limbo of government detainment. It’s a disappointment of a final episode, sure, but at a stretch it works surprisingly well as a poignant critique of shady federal organizations that would rather kidnap an extraterrestrial away from its loving foster family than let it return to its own kind. (Six years later, the cliffhanger was finally resolved in a TV movie called Project ALF.)
