The very first Stephen King novel also turned out to be the very first Stephen King movie when thriller director Brian De Palma adapted his high school horror tale Carrie. De Palma read the book on a recommendation from a friend of his who was also a friend of King’s, and when he found out that no studios had bought the rights yet, he pushed for an adaptation. Sissy Spacek plays Carrie White, an awkward high school girl whose latent supernatural powers are activated by a cabal of relentless bullies, all coming to a head at the movie’s explosive and bloody climax. Stephen King wrote the original first draft of Children of the Corn, based on his short story of the same name, but much of his version spent more time on the history of the fictional small town of Gatlin, Nebraska and its corn harvesting inhabitants, and not enough on the blood and guts and violence to suit the studio. Writer George Goldsmith, whose version was much gorier and more conventional, is the credited writer for the end result, which spent much more of its runtime on the violent acts of the children sacrificing all the adults in the town to protect their harvest. The movie launched a whole franchise of Children of the Corn films that has a dedicated fanbase, but viewed today its B-movie scares and ultimately silly plot feel, well, corny.
