Jack Ryan has never had the tightest continuity as a franchise; by the time Chris Pine took over the role in Shadow Recruit Hollywood had already made four films featuring Tom Clancy’s signature hero featuring three different leading men. And one of those four movies was already a reboot; Ben Affleck played an inexperienced Ryan on his first major mission in The Sum of All Fears. 12 years later, producers basically tried the same schtick again, this time with Pine as a newly recruited Jack Ryan.

Shadow Recruit — a truly awful title, by the way — runs just 105 briskly-paced minutes, and rushes so quickly from Ryan’s tentative first steps as an operative to his hoo-rah superhero moment that it neuters its own core character arc. The absurd speed of his transformation suggests to me that maybe 20-30 minutes of the movie were cut out, either at the script stage or in post-production. Too bad; I’d actually like to see that stuff, particularly if it beefs up the subplot about Ryan’s girlfriend (Keira Knightley) suspecting him of an affair (while he’s actually meeting with CIAcontacts).
