When the Muppets get attention these days, it is unfortunately in stories like that; Disney trying and failing to make the long-running franchise relevant again. They got a fair amount of negative publicity this year with the closure of Henson’s finalMuppets film,Muppet*Vision 3D, which shuttered for good at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park a few months ago, garnering a fair amount of outcry from longtime Muppets fans. (The characters are in the process of being added to another ride in the park, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster.)

These ’90s films do not have good reputations. Most are cheesy and a few are really dated. We love them anyway.

Sidney Lumet, the guy known for gritty New York crime thrillersand socially aware dramas, and Larry Cohen, the master of exploitation, seem like a real creative odd couple. Somehow the combination worked inGuilty as Sin. Cohen hits on a delightful premise, a sort of reverseBasic Instinctwhere a female lawyer is drawn to the extremely handsomeprime suspect in the murder of his wife, and Lumet mostly plays it straight and follows his actors’ leads. Really, he turns the whole film into a showcase for Don Johnson as the ultimate gigolo, and he’s a total hoot as one of the most punchable movie characters in history. (In one scene, a woman tries to buy him a drink in a bar. He turns her down, says she can instead pay for the drink he already has, then immediately leaves her with his empty glass and the bill.) The ’90s’ erotic thriller boom never got much critical love, and often with good reason. ButGuilty as Sinis a nasty little gem.
