‘s digital release aims to boost its haul after underperforming in theaters.
The spice continues to flow as Dune: Part Two takes another big sip of the Water of Life and carries on with its money-making run, now three weeks since the title celebrated its domestic opening. Likewise, Kung Fu Panda 4 also continued to be a hot contender as it rolled out in other markets, including a three-day preview session before its full opening in the country on March 22. Other titles like the Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian-led Love Lies Bleeding and Mark Wahlberg-starrer Arthur the King also rang in their broad premieres but, unfortunately, didn’t gather the same amount of viewers as titles from previous weeks.
Skadooshing its way to the front of the line, Kung Fu Panda 4’s second weekend in theaters saw the film pull ahead of Dune: Part Two in ticket sales, depositing an extra $68.8 million into its bank account, bringing its global total up to $176.5 million. The numbers reflect an international opening which, along with China’s three days of limited previews, included screenings in other countries such as Mexico, Germany, and India, with audiences stoked to tag along for Po’s (Jack Black) latest adventure. The title is on track to celebrate an impressive haul but is still a bit of a ways off from seeing the same numbers as the three films that came before it.
As for the second title in Denis Villeneuve’s feature-length adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novels, Dune: Part Two, is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, as it neither chips nor shatters, but instead dominates in its newest market in Japan, raking in $1.7 million including previews, and $51.2 million for. Not only are fans of how the celebrated filmmaker tackled the first film returning to see the next stage of Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) journey, but word has moved like a sandworm to a thumper, with a fresh set of audiences turning out in droves to see it in theaters and IMAX. This weekend saw the project hit a major milestone as it has officially surpassed the first film’s $434.8 million — which was impressive in and of itself as it welcomed a same-day release on Max. The film currently sits at $494.7 million globally.
‘Madame Web’ Casts a Digital Web
Thought we were done talking about Madame Web? We sure aren’t! Perhaps the best piece of cinema to come from 2024 (so far) semi-shocked audiences everywhere when it was announced just days ago that the movie would be swinging onto digital. The news comes just one month after the film debuted in theaters on February 14 alongside the Kingsley Ben-Adir-led biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, which is still raising its voice at the box office. Following the flop of 2022’s Morbius, it didn’t seem like Sony could dip any lower with its spider-based productions, but the Dakota Johnson-starrer only managed to scoop up $97.5 million globally. Now that the feature has been released on digital, hopefully, people can see the movie for the campy classic that it is and push it along on its journey toward cult status.
This weekend, Dune: Part Two may finally see a bigger slump in numbers as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Immaculate, and Late Night with the Devil haunt their way into theaters.
