How many times have you heard a horror director defend their work publicly byclaimingthey“madethe movie for the fans, not the critics”? Too many! Guys, no director makes a movie for thecritics. There are only like 12 working film critics left in the world, and they don’t pay for their own movie tickets. Unless you’re aiming to make a movie that grosses $216 total at the worldwide box office, making a movie for the critics is a very stupid idea.

Also: Film criticslike movies. This appears to be a tough concept for some moviegoers to grasp, but it is absolutely true. No one goes into the underpaid and overly competitive field of criticism because they hate films. Why subject themselvesto hours upon hours of misery otherwise? Unless you’re a masochist who really enjoys being poor, it’s just not a smart career path.

Plus if you look at a site likeRotten Tomatoes, you can see quite clearly that film critics like many movies, including plenty in genres they supposedly despise like horror. And they don’t just favorjust the landmark titlesmade by respected auteurs like Alfred Hitchcock’sPsychoor John Carpenter’sHalloweeneither. No no. I’m talking exploitation films, monster movies, “torture porn,” sequels, prequels, and more. I’vecollected 10 such examples below. And I can assure you: I made this list for the fans, not the critics.

Although critics have a reputation for unfairly dismissing horror movies, they do get it right from time to time.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 60
It feels like the number of positive reviews of a horror film is often inversely connected to how much gore it contains; the bloodier it is, the worse the reviews. (Someone should do a research study on this.) Eli Roth’s Hostel is no slouch in the viscera department, but it got surprisingly decent reviews for a movie about backpacking tourists who hacked to pieces by European businessmen. 60 on Rotten Tomatoes is only slightly “fresh,” but show me another “torture porn” film that got that many good reviews. (Hostel: Part II certainly didn’t.)

The iconic image Struzan created for John Carpenter’s The Thing has very little relation to the movie itself. The alien in the film is a shapeshifting monster; the one on Struzan’s poster emanates light from an unseen face tucked into the hood of a winter coat. And yet something about the mood the piece creates captures the mystery of “the ultimate in alien terror” in Carpenter’s film, along with the notion that any person could possess some unholy evil that’s about to explode out from their benign surface.
