Before it came out, I would not have predicted a Marvel movie directed by an Oscar winner and based on some of Jack Kirby’s boldest comics would have yielded maybe the company’s least essential title. Sadly, Eternals never quite came together. It’s a mostly faithful adaptation of Kirby’s core concepts with a few small but very frustrating changes — like turning the evil Deviants into a bunch of generic monsters with no goals or motivations. The large cast features some nice supporting performances from Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tyree Henry, but the two leads — Gemma Chan as Sersi and Richard Madden as Ikaris — struggle to sell their supposedly torrid love affair. (Their romance has spanned 6,000 years; they look like they’re on their first date and it’s going really badly.) The script occasionally explores interesting ideas about the connections between superheroes, mythology, and religion, only to repeatedly abandon them for a series of stock fight scenes with boring monsters. It’s hard to envision a more boring movie about immortal alien robots trying to prevent total armageddon than this one.
