Anyone who knows anything about cinema flops has at least heard whispers of director Michael Cimino’s famously ill-fated Heaven’s Gate, a would-be epic Western film about a land dispute set in 1890s Wyoming. The movie’s difficult production is now the stuff of legend, with everything from allegations of animal abuse to rumors of Cimino’s authoritarian directorial style marring what could have been one of the great American epics. Cimino’s vision was ambitious and expensive, driving the cost to four times its original budget.
