These popular 1990s films did bafflingly well with critics and audiences.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87

In what’s become one of the more infamous Oscar bungles in history, Goodfellas lost 1990’s Oscar race to Dances With Wolves, Kevin Costner’s well-shot Western about a white Civil War soldier who becomes fascinated with the local natives near his Army outpost and eventually joins their tribe. While its story was already tired and predictable in 1990, Dances With Wolves was an enormous hit at the time, with audiences and with critics, and it did feature solid direction from star Kevin Costner. Did it feature better direction than Goodfellas? I don’t know about that.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best movie is this mind-bending sci-fi spectacle about a construction worker who buys a memory implant of a vacation to Mars and inadvertently discovers a past life as a secret agent he never knew he had. Or maybe he’s having a bad reaction to the memory implant and what transpires onscreen are the last gasps of a dying mind. Either way, Paul Verhoeven teases and prods the audience and makes perfect use of Schwarzenegger as a man on the run, unsure of his identity, wary about his home life, hungry for adventure, and prone to absurd jokes. (“Consider that a divorce.”) Total Recall embodies the best of Arnold: Vulgar, exciting, darkly hilarious, and weirdly thoughtful.
