2

3
‘The Wire’ (2002 – 2008)
Rotten Tomatoes: 95% | IMDb: 9.3/10
A crime drama series set in Baltimore, Maryland, The Wire is easily one of the greatest shows HBO has ever produced. Created by author and former police reporter David Simon, the show explores the various institutions of the city (both legal and criminal) through the stories of its residents. The series boasts a massive, predominantly Black ensemble cast that includes Dominic West, John Doman, Idris Elba, Frankie Faison, Wendell Pierce, Lance Reddick, and more, with several real-life Baltimore and Maryland figures appearing in guest roles.
If you’re a longtime fan of HBO shows, you have inevitably heard of The Wire. The series aired five critically acclaimed seasons on the network, and though it didn’t have great ratings, it developed a huge cult following that’s still strong today. It’s a thrilling crime series that also serves as a layered, almost literary portrait of Baltimore, as well as a clear-eyed exploration of the corruption and inequality that pervert the institutions meant to serve the people. The show earned nominations for many major awards during its broadcast, and it is widely regarded as one of the greatest American TV shows of all time.
