The double-edge sword of remakes: The reason you make one is to capitalize on an audience’s familiarity with a beloved property, but youalso can’t make something that feelstoofamiliar, or that same audience will think they’ve seen your new moviealready and they’ll pass on buying a ticket. As a result, there’s a push and pullgoing on behind the scenes of every remake, with their creators weighing how close to stay (or how far to stray) from their source material.

When filmmakers lean toward the latter, you gettitles the like ten on the list below — which all qualify as remakes, but are also so different from the movies that inspired them that they technically belong to an entirely different genre than their cinematic predecessors. Some go even further; they’re set in different countries and different time periods. One or two openly mock the movie they are based on. Sometimes they feature people bursting into song just for kicks. (When I burst into song just for kicks I get arrested. When A Star Is Born does it,it wins Oscars! That doesn’t seem fair at all.)

Asignificant number of these remakes prove the malleability of their source material; some samurai movies worked equally well (or better) as westerns, for example. Others backfired spectacularly. (Just because your not-very-scary horror movie is beloved by fans of so-bad-it’s-good nonsense does not mean it deserves a full-bown comedy remake.) But they are all notablebecause they turned anold movie into a new film a totally novel way.

Original Movie: Seven Samurai (1954)
Original Genre: Samurai action
Remake: The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Remake Genre: Western
The Magnificent Seven is such an iconic tale of the frontier that it’s genuinely surprising to learn it is based on a story from not only another genre, but another country and historical period. Six years prior Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa released maybe his magnum opus, Seven Samurai, a tale of desperate village that recruits a group of seven ronin to protect their village from raiders. Interestingly, when the film was first released in America, it was retitled The Magnificent Seven —and when, a few years later, John Sturges made an Americanized version of the same story, now about a Mexican town under siege and the band of gunslingers who assemble to defend them, it borrowed that same name.

Box Office Total: $15.6 million worldwide
The Bonfire of the Vanities was one of the best-selling and most-discussed books of the 1980s. The film rights were highly sought after, and purchased by Warner Bros., who brought in A-list director Brian De Palma, and recruited such notable actors as Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, and Bruce Willis to headline the cast.
Unfortunately, all three stars were miscast, and much of author Tom Wolfe’s social satire was sanded down in the transition from page to screen. The result: One of the most infamous flops in Hollywood history, and one that’s the subject of one of the great books about moviemaking ever, Julie Salamon’s The Devil’s Candy.
