The Handmaid’s Tale gets all the hype with regard to adaptations of Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s novels, so Netflix’s adaptation of her crime novel Alias Grace flew somewhat under the radar when it was released, but it’s well worth checking out.

Adapted by Sarah Polley, directed by Mary Harron, and starring Sarah Gadon (Canadians all), it follows the psychiatric evaluation of an infamous murderess who claims to have no memory of committing her horrific crime, hinting that her body may have been possessed by the ghost of a former friend. Inspired by a real historical crime, it interrogates how we decide guilt vs innocence and shows how the marginalized are always caught in the crossfire. Not only that, David Cronenberg guest stars.

I’vewritten at length aboutCongo, a very amusing attempt to replicateJurassic Park’s successby adapting another Michael Crichton novel, this one with hyper-intelligent apes in the place of dinosaurs.
