Maybe it’s because most of the cast didn’t make waves in the same way that many of the actors from Band of Brothers and The Pacific did (seriously, almost every famous guy of a certain era can be traced back to those two shows), but Generation Kill remains one of HBO’s best and most underrated miniseries. Based on the book written by reporter Evan Wright when he was embedded with the U.S. Marines during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and overseen by David Simon and Ed Burns of The Wire, the show presents a clear-eyed and mostly objective view of what the first few months of the war were like, and stars an early-career Alexander Skarsgard as the spookily calm and collected Staff Sergeant Brad “Iceman” Colbert. It’s intense, violent, and unblinking, and one of the best pieces of media about that time that have been made in the decades since.

In The Exorcist, a possessed Regan warns an astronaut attending a party at the MacNeil residence that his mission is doomed. That astronaut, named Billy Cutshaw, ended up having a nervous breakdown before his scheduled launch and committed himself to an institution. Thus begins The Ninth Configuration, the directorial debut of writer William Peter Blatty, and technically a soft Exorcist sequel.

Blatty originally wanted William Friedkin to adapt his novel Twinkle, Twinkle, “Killer” Kane! but had trouble getting the funding, so they collaborated on The Exorcist instead. Years later, Blatty rewrote the previous book, retitling it The Ninth Configuration, and, when he couldn’t get a studio to bite on his adapted screenplay, decided to direct the movie himself (with half the funding from the PepsiCo company, on the condition Blatty film the movie in Hungary for tax purposes). Blatty would later direct The Exorcist III, which is a sequel to The Exorcist, and considered the third chapter in this semi-official trilogy.
