T
hese days, if you want to know what’s hot and not in the beauty world, head to Tiktok for some tea. Amid other beauty trends, skin flooding has got a lot of folks on the platform talking. While a ton of individuals think the concept is relatively new, some of us have been doing it without knowing what it’s called.
What is skin flooding?
Skin flooding is a skincare routine that involves the use and layering of hydrating serums, moisturizers, and lightweight creams to get the skin soft and extra supple. A slew of dermatologists on TikTk have confirmed the effectiveness of the method, and we have seen, and copied, many of their skin flooding routines. Thanks to TikTok.
Skin flooding steps
There are normally five to six steps in skin flooding, although some people use more products than necessary. Most dermatologists have recommended five steps.
- Step 1: Any skin flooding routine begins with a mild cleanser that thoroughly cleanses the skin, taking out skin-deep dirt and oil.
- Step 2: The next step is applying a toner. A toner hydrates the face and preps it to assimilate the following products. Most people prefer rose water or thermal water spray instead. Nevertheless, the goal is to keep the face hydrated and ready to absorb the components of the other products.
- Step 3: After a hydrating toner, a serum comes next. Some individuals use either hyaluronic acid serum or a niacinamide serum, while others use both.
- Step 4: Next up is a thick moisturizing cream to seal in or lock in the preceding skincare products.
- Step 5: The last step is always sunscreen. Sunscreen is beneficial to the skin as it protects it from the harmful effects of UV rays. Skin experts highly recommend sunscreen with SPF 30 to be used on the face and neck.
Are face oils and eye creams used in skin flooding?
Exfoliants, eye creams, petroleum jelly, retinol, and face oils are incorporated into daily or weekly skincare routines. However, these products aren’t used for hydrating or moisturizing, so it would be wrong to include them in a skin-flooding routine. Exfoliants or face scrubs are used to clean and shed off dead skin cells. Eye creams are used only around the eyes for moisturizing the thin skin around the eyes.
Currently, there’s a thing with using petroleum jelly to moisturize the face or lips. Skin experts have advised against it, especially for people with oily skin. Petroleum jelly can clog skin pores and leave it susceptible to acne and blackheads.
Meanwhile, retinol is a skin repair agent that cures breakouts and creates an even complexion. But it can be drying at first. Also, retinol should only be used at night. Finally, oils leave the skin glowing and supple. But they should be used in small quantities as they clog the pores and lead to breakouts.
Benefits of skin flooding
This skincare routine aims to create hydrated skin which allows the penetration of effective ingredients. Skin flooding leaves your skin looking super hydrated, soft, and glowing — a desire for all individuals with dry and flaky skin. With the hydrating qualities of the products used in skin flooding, it’s almost impossible to have your skin clogged and dirty. Instead, clear and smooth skin is achieved.
Products used in skin flooding
Skin flooding products include a foaming face cleanser, a non-alcoholic toner (rosewater or thermal water spray can be used instead of a toner), a serum (hyaluronic acid serum, Vitamin C serum, or a niacinamide serum), a moisturizer face lotion, and sunscreen. Every other thing is extra.
Does it have disadvantages?
Skin flooding is an answered prayer to dry skin-related problems. But, are there downsides to the TikTok skin trend? There are not many known disadvantages of the skincare routine. However, dermatologists and skincare experts urge people to have essential knowledge about their skin before using certain products. This is due to issues of allergy, skin sensitivity, and wrong use of products. In summary, it is vital to visit a dermatologist if your skin is sensitive.
