he cuts, textures, contours, and charisma projected last week by audacious celebs were of a lofty grade. The stars ushered in Black History Month in what could only be described as impeccable fashion. It was a glam type of week with events like the Spotify Best New Artist party in LA, where the stars spruced up to make major fashion statements. Elsewhere, the annual Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch was, per usual, a crème de la crème affair and a great precursor to the highlight of the weekend: the Grammy Awards.
The 65th Grammy Awards was an excellent moment for Black celebrities. It was indeed a time for the stars to be exalted for the hard work they put into their career. Afrobeats star, Tems won her first, and well-deserved Grammy. The 27-year-old took home the “Best Melodic Rap Performance” alongside Drake and Future for the song “Wait For You.”
Meanwhile, Beyoncé took no one by surprise when she became the most Grammy-awarded artist with 32 wins to her name. Queen B and her husband, Jay Z, are both the most nominated artistes in Grammy history, with 88 nominations each. That’s some power couple energy. In the spirit of making history, iconic actress Viola Davis became an EGOT last night. The star won a Grammy for Best Audio Book and is the 18th person to ever win an Emmy, Oscar, Tony, and Grammy award.
The Looks
Beyoncé is obviously in her “secure the bag” moment. Over a week after shutting down Dubai, the mom-of-three stayed true to her Alien superstar status with fashion-forward getups at the invite-only Roc Nation party. Queen Bey is renowned for being anti-basic, and her Gareth Pugh number reenacted this fact. The fit featured a metallic corset, an exaggerated and structured collar, deconstructed sleeves, and matching metallic pumps. Bey kept her tresses in a familiar wavy form, and subtle face beat for balance. When in doubt, a white dress knows how to deliver.
Former Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland showed up at Roc Nation brunch in another solid white dress. Perhaps the girls’ group chat had a bestie dress code: “sizzling mini white dress.” Ms. Rowland certainly pulled out all the stops in this white Ashi Studio number. From the sleeve components to the ruffled bodice, the star was effortlessly a 10 across boards.
As we celebrated the highs of the Grammys last week, some stars took the time to grace the carpet at the Fifteen Percent Pledge gala. Spotted at the event was Lori Harvey in a sleek black number that flaunts dramatic cut-out details. The gala was more than a time to enjoy good fashion but also one to spotlight the importance of the Fifteen Percent Pledge mission of encouraging retailers to pledge at least 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. Talk about doing good in style!
