I
t’s become normal to expect the sophistication of intricately woven garments with structured silhouettes, geometric cuts, and unapologetically loud embellishments to sweep across the red carpets and our timelines graciously. Even though they’ve become prevalent features of star-studded events, these elegant looks are never a bore. Last week, award shows and the Fashion Weeks had no intention of laying the baton. The Independent Spirits Awards seemed to be the spot for the celebrated, with famous stars swaying in ostentatious attire. These celebrities have created a culture of unequivocal unique style renderings–one without precarious endings.
This resolution could be why the style energy continues to charge toward the line. A line we believe doesn’t wish to be found. Even when married to dainty textures, bold embellishments like florals, feathers, and sequins refused the understated invitation and instead, chose to make notable declarations. It’s indeed a glam overload, and the excesses aren’t willing to be curbed.
The Looks
Even on a day when Jodie Turner-Smith chooses to step out of exaggerated gowns for dainty minis, she has the undeniable skill of never missing. Turner-Smith wore a turtleneck Elie Saab feathered dress to the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards. This is your sign to sport a mini-dress that’s far from rudimentary.
In a room full of icons, Angela Bassett steals the spotlight effortlessly. The star rocked a dramatic black Moschino suit to the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles. The ensemble featured a train padded with red linen, a satin belt-like fabric to accentuate the waistline, and a matching lightweight fascinator. They said to bring in the costume in full style, and Ms. Bassett delivered.
For Tony Ward couture, even a simple caftan shows off lushness at its peak. Star of the moment, Sheryl Lee Ralph lifted spirits in a sleeveless midi dress by the brand. The bodice details were neatly threaded, and the layers of luxe materials made up for the luxurious number. The main catch was the color, which shone perfectly on Ralph’s skin. We don’t care to know if Ivy Coco is her daughter, the stylist deserves a raise, ASAP.
Meanwhile, it was a throwback moment for Kerry Washington who dazzled in a hot red monochrome take styled by Law Roach. The red Marc Bouwer number she ‘bodied was once worn by Whitney Houston at the second BET Walk of Fame awards in 1996.
