#1. Halle – Angel
Following a critically-acclaimed performance as Ariel in Disney’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid,” Halle Bailey is finally putting out music of her own. For over a decade, Halle Bailey — who is simply going by Halle for her solo era — has been putting out music with her sister, Chlöe as the superstar duo, Chloe X Halle. Now, with her solo single, Angel, Halle is entering the landscape to chart a path for herself. On Angel, she reflects on growing up in the spotlight, and the painful words she received on the way. Over a piano-and-string-driven ballad, the singer rises above the heartache and encourages others to follow.
#2. Sarkodie – Freaky & Naughty
Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie also came out with a brand new solo single. Titled Freaky & Naughty, it’s a mid-tempo Afrobeats tune that sees Ghana’s rap Landlord deliver a masterful performance, creating a perfect blend of melody and rap. Sarkodie displays growth and shows off versatility on the new song produced by K.O. Freaky & Naughty serves as a follow-up to his last single, Try Me where the rapper threw heavy shade at actress, Yvonne Nelson over the explosive revelation in her new book about aborting their child. The most decorated Ghanaian rapper picks up the mic once again to unleash a different kind of flow and dope bars.
#3. Doja Cat – Paint The Town Red
Controversy is nothing new to Doja Cat. Her social media posts last month about her followers generated strong opinions. However, it’s possible that she thrives on stirring up controversy. Doja ostensibly alludes to the emotional repercussions of the recent success she’s attained in her song Paint The Town Red, which is her latest release. Doja discusses fame, wealth, and pop stardom over a jazz-infused Dionne Warwick groove. She channels the devil she is continually portrayed as in the song’s music video, vanquishes demons both inwardly and outwardly in the video’s fictional realm, and establishes the rule of law.
#4. Uncle Waffles ft. Tony Duardo, Manana & Lusanda – Echoes
Since becoming an internet sensation during the pandemic, renowned DJ, Uncle Waffles has continued to make her mark in the music industry globally. With her steadily releasing globally recognized songs, it’s clear she isn’t going away soon. Her latest release is Echoes on which she features other South African musical sensations — Tony Duardo, Manana, and Lusanda. On Echoes, the collaborative efforts of these South African artists shine through to produce one of this summer’s grooviest songs.
#5. Usher ft. 21 Savage and Summer Walker – Good Good
Ending a romantic relationship doesn’t always mean all love is lost. Usher’s new single, Good Good featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage tells a nuanced story of a cordial breakup. Produced by Mel & Mus, Good Good plays like a love letter to a former lover. Usher opens the track with a bittersweet message to an ex about their failed relationship. While he would have liked for things to work between them, he holds nothing but love and hopes she will find her soulmate. Walker appears in the second verse, offering a woman’s perspective. Good Good is Usher’s second single release of the year and the second single from his ninth album.
