Nigerian music sensation Asake has secured a notable victory at the 26th MOBO Awards, clinching the esteemed title of Best African Music Act. The prestigious awards ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, February 7, made history by holding its proceedings at the Utilita Arena Sheffield in Sheffield, United Kingdom, for the first time.

Asake’s triumph was particularly notable given the stiff competition from a roster of esteemed artists including Adekunle Gold, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, Libianca, Rema, Tyla, Uncle Waffles, and Wizkid. However, Asake’s artistry and impact catapulted them to the forefront, earning them the coveted accolade.

Hip-hop queen Nicki Minaj has sent fans into a frenzy with a teaser of her upcoming collaboration with Afrobeats hitmaker Burna Boy. The rapper took to social media to share a sneak peek of the remix of “Tested, Trusted, and Approved,” which is one of the singles off Burna Boy’s 7th album, “I Told Them.” The upcoming single comes off Burna Boy’s performance at the 66th Grammy Awards, where he became the first African artist to perform at the main ceremony.

3. South Africa: Vusi Nova gifted Zahara’s guitar by the late singer’s family

Award-winning artist Vusi Nova recently took to Instagram to share a heartwarming video of himself playing a tune on a guitar. Nova, in his caption, revealed that he had been gifted the guitar by the family of award-winning musician Bulelwa Mkutukana, better known as Zahara. The Afro-pop singer died in December at the age of 36 after over a month in the hospital. Nova had been by the family’s side during her hospital stay and at the funeral.

Vusi was a close friend to Zahara, and since her untimely death has been posting some of their memorable videos on social media. In his caption, Nova shared about the beautiful thing the family had done by gifting him the prized items.

4. Headies Awards returns to Nigeria after two international editions

In new developments, the Headies Academy has announced that the prestigious award is set to return to Nigeria in 2024 after two consecutive editions in Atlanta, USA. The announcement was made in a press release issued by the Headies Academy on February 7. The Headies Academy is yet to fix a date for the 17th Headies Awards, which will celebrate the feats achieved in the Nigerian music industry in 2023.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the highest-earning athlete in the world in 2023, while Inter Miami star Lionel Messi came in third on the list. Ronaldo signed a lucrative contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr last January and earned an incredible £218 million ($275m) in the course of the year. That puts him at the top of the list of highest-paid athletes, according to reports, with a massive £57m more than the second highest, golf star Jon Rahm, who earned £161m ($203m).

Messi, who left Paris Saint-Germain for Inter Miami last summer, was the third best-paid athlete for the year, raking in £103m ($130m), just ahead of basketball icon LeBron James (£99.8m/$126m), while Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe rounded off the top five with £99.2m ($125m). Al-Hilal and Brazil attacker Neymar came in just behind Mbappe after making £96m ($121m) in 2023, and the next highest earner in football was Karim Benzema, who made £61m ($77m) and came in 12th on the list.
