Lauren’s Kids
After discovering nearly two decades ago, that his daughter, Lauren Book, had been sexually abused by their in-home nanny, Ron and Lauren have led an incredible fight to end childhood sexual abuse. In 2007, Ron Book helped found Lauren’s Kids alongside his daughter, State Senator Lauren Book. Lauren’s Kids is a non-profit organization that stives to educate and raise awareness about the realities and prominence of childhood sexual abuse. The non-profit created Safer, Smarter Schools, an in-school curricula for students in all grade levels, to learn about personal safety and sexual abuse prevention. The lessons are designed to teach students how to recognize, prevent, and protect themselves against sexual abuse. Today, Lauren’s Kids empowers students to safeguard their personal boundaries in more than 90,000 classrooms across 40 states.
Since 2003, Ron Book and his daughter have entered the halls of the Florida Legislature to tirelessly fight for sexual abuse victims by passing laws that protect Florida children and families. Together, they have advocated for nearly two dozen legislative victories ranging from funding for Sexual Assault Treatment Centers and access to trained counselors and professionals to the criminalization of sexual cyber harassment.
Miami-Dade Homeless Trust
Former Mayor Alex Penelas appointed Ron Book as Chair of the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, the lead agency for individuals experiencing homelessness in Broward County. Since Ron’s involvement 25 years ago, his leadership and hard work, has earned the Trust national best-practice model on multiple occasions. Recently, the Trust became one of the first in the U.S. to announce their community’s end of Veteran homelessness.
Working with The M Network, the Trust developed the “I don’t need spare change. I need real change” campaign, which focuses on funding long term measures to combat homelessness. Currently, the Trust is implementing the Miami-Dade County Community Homeless Plan: Priority Home that establishes a framework of policy and programs to end to homelessness. Since 2020, the Trust has made over 7,300 housing referrals.
