Finland-based metals producer Outokumpu Corp. has announced the appointment of Kati ter Horst as its President and CEO, effective October 9, 2024. Outokumpu had announced in early May that its current CEO, Heikki Malinen, intended to leave the firm to pursue a career opportunity outside the company. Malinen, who joined Outokumpu as President and CEO two years ago, was also recruited from the Outokumpu Board room and had held executive positions at other companies.
Ter Horst, who has previous executive experience with Belgium-based Aliaxis S.A. and Finland-based Stora Enso, has been a member of Outokumpu’s board of directors since 2016 and has served as the board’s vice chair since 2022. Outokumpu stated that she would resign from the board at the end of September following her appointment as CEO.
Ter Horst expressed her honor and excitement about leading Outokumpu, highlighting the company’s role as a global pioneer in sustainable stainless steel and its strengthened financial position due to recent transformations. She emphasized her enthusiasm for guiding Outokumpu into the next phase of industry evolution as a global frontrunner.
Kari Jordan, the company’s Board Chair, remarked that ter Horst has a proven track record in process industries and extensive international leadership experience in complex business environments. Jordan also noted that ter Horst’s long-term involvement with Outokumpu as an active and respected board member gives her a profound knowledge and understanding of the company’s business and strategy.
Outokumpu operates recycled-content stainless steel mills in Finland and Sweden, a rolling mill in Calvert, Alabama, in the United States, and has operations in Germany and Mexico. Late last year, the company acquired a 10 percent stake in Germany-based stainless steel and alloys recycling firm Cronimet North-East GmbH.
