A recent study conducted by the Swiss Institute for Economic Research (KOF) has unveiled striking disparities in the origins of wealth among Switzerland’s richest individuals. According to the study, a mere 8% of the 300 wealthiest Swiss citizens accumulated their fortunes through their own efforts. In stark contrast, 80% of these individuals acquired their wealth through inheritance.
The study further highlights a significant gender disparity among the super-rich, with men overwhelmingly dominating this exclusive group. An astounding 90% of the wealthiest individuals are men, and the proportion of women among the super-rich appears to be declining rather than increasing.
In addition to the KOF study, another report cited by the NZZ am Sonntag sheds light on the broader social distribution of inheritances in Switzerland. This study, led by Marius Brülhart, a professor at the University of Lausanne’s Faculty of Business Administration (HEC), reveals a wide gap in inheritance amounts received by different segments of the population. According to Brülhart’s findings, three-quarters of heirs in Switzerland receive inheritances of no more than approximately $112,470. Furthermore, a mere 1.5% of inheritances exceed one million francs.
These findings underscore the concentration of wealth among a small, predominantly male segment of the Swiss population and raise questions about the role of inheritance in perpetuating economic inequality. The data suggests that a significant portion of the nation’s wealth is being passed down through generations rather than being earned, contributing to a persistent wealth gap.
