Madeira is a complex of European islands, specifically in colorful Portugal. With beautiful landscapes and seas with exotic, crystal clear waters, it is not unreasonable that the islands are bustling with tourists who wish to spend their holidays there every summer. Today, we will meet Madeira and explain why you should visit.
Ponta de Sao Lourenco
Ponta de Sao Lourenco is the easternmost point of the island of Madeira and one of its most charming attractions, which every tourist should visit. Hiking is a viral activity on the island, and Ponta de Sao Lourenco is one of the most favorite routes. You don’t necessarily need a car to get there; you can also go by bus.
The route is around 7 kilometers, and throughout its duration, you have the feeling that you are at the end of the Earth, where the sky joins the sea. The Walk will last around 3-4 hours, with stops for many photos and, of course, for snacks. The landscape you will see at every point is breathtaking. Wild nature with giant lava-colored volcano rocks and unusual vegetation, which has flourished there due to the special soil and climate of the area, beautifies the landscape with its unique characteristics. It is also crucial that there is no sample of human habitation in the surrounding area other than the occasional picnic tables installed to enjoy a quick break. Something powerful and magical in the atmosphere creates intense emotions for you.
Its beaches
Madeira is a purely volcanic island and, unfortunately, does not have many natural sandy beaches. Nevertheless, the clear, blue waters of the seas combined with the fantastic scenery they offer compensate the visitor. Of course, there are always beaches that stand out. Praia do Porto do Seixal, with its volcanic sand in a shade of red, its blue waters, and imposing rocks, is rightfully one of the best beaches in Madeira. The sea is a 40-minute drive from Funchal, the island’s capital. It is not very big, but it is worth a visit as it has been characterized as the perfect beach by Instagrammers and nature lovers.
The beauty of the natural pools of Porto Moniz, southwest of the island, is indescribable. This iconic place has natural pools of every depth, some accessible for children and people with disabilities. The eruption of volcanoes has created pools, and the impetuosity of the waves fills them with water.
Since we are talking about natural pools, another magnificent place is in Seixal. Here you can find natural pools with wild beauty, where the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea make the perfect mix of a dreamy landscape. The experience of this place will give you unforgettable and unique moments.
Walks in the “levadas”
Levadas are irrigation canals or aqueducts for the Greater Madeira region. Almost all canals have amazing hiking trails with verdant surroundings and a refreshing atmosphere. A beautiful route is that of Levada do Alecrim. During the hike, there are high waterfalls and blue lakes, always combined with the Green of nature around.
Do not miss the opportunity to rest next to the waterfall, enjoying the moments of relaxation and tranquility it offers and the pure oxygen to ”refill your batteries.” Levadas are magical places that will charm you at first sight and certainly deserve your attention and visit.
Madeira’s characteristic wine
A landmark of the island is its wine, with its sweet aftertaste and intoxicating aroma. There are many museums in Madeira dedicated to wine and its production. Wine variety tests and a detailed tour explain the journey from the grapes’ picking until they are sent to the wineries. There are varieties of wines – the most vintage – that ripen inside barrels for a whole century. The Wine season in Madeira usually lasts from late summer to October or November.
On Portugal’s Paradise Island, there are a plethora of things to do and see, no matter which season you will choose to go. Finally, remember to try diving and surfing, two activities for which Madeira is known.
