Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., the former Chairman and CEO of Visa Inc., has been appointed to General Motors Co.’s board of directors, the automaker announced on Thursday.
Kelly’s addition brings the total number of directors on GM’s board to 13, with a diverse range of experience in manufacturing, information technology, digital commerce, defense, transportation, and cybersecurity. The board includes six women, and 12 of the directors are independent.
Kelly, 66, served as Visa’s CEO from 2016 to 2023 and was elected chairman of the board in 2019. He became executive chairman in 2023 and is widely recognized for steering Visa through a period of significant technological transformation. He stepped down from the board in February 2024.
Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, expressed enthusiasm for Kelly’s appointment, highlighting his deep expertise in finance, technology, and consumer insights as valuable assets for GM. She emphasized that his experience would help the company explore new growth opportunities in electric vehicles, autonomous technology, and software services.
In his own statement, Kelly remarked that it is an exciting period for GM as the company leverages technology to innovate and create new customer experiences. He expressed his eagerness to serve GM’s shareholders and collaborate with other board members to help the company fulfill its vision.
