The Goldbergs bade farewell to viewers back in 2023 after ten seasons and 229 episodes on the air, following the titular family in the 1980s. At last, however, series creator Adam F. Goldberg has now found his follow-up to his semi-autobiographical comedy, and he’s teaming up with another sitcom veteran to make it happen. A report from Deadline today revealed that Mad About You star and co-creator Paul Reiser is working on a new multi-camera series at Fox and has tapped Goldberg to help pen the script with him and his son, Leon Reiser. The younger Reiser is also producing, while the elder Reiser executive produces and stars in the sitcom, which is currently in early development.
The as-yet-untitled sitcom will follow a dysfunctional father-son duo in the aftermath of a fallout within the family. After the twentysomething fails to launch himself into adulthood, he’s forced to work alongside his dad in the unglamorous New Jersey damaged-goods business. Little else is known beyond the premise, but it sets up for a story all about two generations finding common ground and understanding with each other despite one’s struggles, as well as a lot of laughs. In addition to Goldberg and Reiser, Nacelle’s Brian Volk-Weiss, Michael Pelmont, and Matt Ochacher are also set as executive producers, with Fox Entertainment Studios behind the production.
Reiser and Goldberg’s team-up is part of a larger push by Fox to get back in the sitcom game. Call Me Kat was the last multi-camera series at the network, with its other comedies, Animal Control and Going Dutch, being single-camera. To make up for this absence, Fox also has a project in the works based on the life of actor-comedian Earthquake, produced by Bill Burr’s North Hill Productions, and a new series called Perf from I’m Sorry creator and Tulsa King alum Andrea Savage. Regarding their chances, Reiser feels confident that his talented team can make another hit like The Goldbergs and Mad About You before it. “So excited to be creating this show with the good people at Fox and my two great partners in crime — Adam F. Goldberg and Leon Reiser,” he said in an official statement. “This feels like it’s on its way to be something really special.”
What Else Have Paul and Leon Reiser Been Done Lately?
Before leading his new sitcom project, Reiser will be appearing in the semi-autobiographical tale of another acclaimed creator. He’s part of the main cast of BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg‘s new series Long Story Short, which debuts on Netflix on August 22. It’s about to be a solid return to television for him after his recent turns in films like The Problem With People and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Leon Reiser served as an assistant director on the former, but the team-up with his father and Goldberg will be a big step-up for him, marking his first writing credit.
The Reisers’ and Goldberg’s new sitcom is still in early development. While we wait for more updates, The Goldbergs is available to stream in its entirety on Hulu.
