And Just Like That…“,”photo-description”:”

Sex and the City is one of the most culture-shifting TV shows ever. The HBO series following a group of four women navigating romance, sex, careers, and friendship was ahead of its time and boundary-pushing when it began airing in 1998. The same cannot be said for its 2020s revival series, And Just Like That… Perhaps one of its greatest offenses is the deeply noticeable lack of Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones, the series’ best character (you can fight me on that but you know it’s true).

Still, the revival has found plenty of other ways to get on fans’ nerves, from butchering some of its strongest characters (come back to us, Miranda!) to actually killing off others or nuking their personalities entirely. Plus, the fashion pales in comparison to the original series, appearing more like sartorial satire than trend-setting style, and the cringe-inducing dialogue is slathered in more clichés than whatever tired romance novel Carrie Brandshaw is writing in Season 3. And yet, drawn like a helpless moth to the flame of nostalgia, this longtime Sex and the City fan refuses to stop watching.

When people talk about once-beloved shows that don’t hold up in the modern era, The West Wing tends to pop up more often than not. It’s not that The West Wing was particularly awful, or had bad plot arcs, or gave its actors cringey dialogue (though the latter two are sometimes true). It’s that it was an aspirational show rather than an accurate one, with a general sense of pie-in-the-sky righteousness that, considering the current state of politics in this country, doesn’t feel very true to life. The America of The West Wing was run by brilliant philosopher kings who always came out on top of every moral scenario, or, if they didn’t, got their comeuppance later. That’s just not how the world works, and watching something like that now feels empty rather than reassuring. (Don’t even get us started on The Newsroom.)
