Clearly, I would. But as a decadeof articles at this website conclusively proves, I will ingestanything tied, however tenuously, to a movie. And these new Pop-Tarts, which are supposedly filled with a popular blue raspberry flavor not seen on store shelves since 2019, are inspired by Marvel’sThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, acomics property not seenon multiplex screenssince 2015. Not to be outdone by one of the worst superhero films of the 21st century,Marvel’s FF reboot already got a four-flavor pizza from Little Caesarsand its own proprietary blue milk. Now it’s gotits own Pop-Tarts too, available at Walmarts around the country (except the one on Yancy Street) for a limited time. If you think I’m making this intro extra long just so I can put offeating them for a few more minutes … no comment.

In honor of the new Fantastic Four movie there are new Fantastic Four Pop-Tarts. But are they truly fantastic?

According to the press release, these “fan-favorite” blue raspberry Pop-Tarts are returning to stores “after a six-year hiatus.” The blue color is supposedly “cosmic power-inspired” and are meant to “strike the perfect balance of tangy, fruity and sweet.” We’ll see about that.

Kellanova (formerly known as Kellogg’s) is also offering Fantastic Four Pop-Tarts with identical movie-inspired designs and the more typical strawberry-flavored filling. Those you can get at any store that stocks Pop-Tarts; the blue raspberry varietal is only available at Walmarts. If you don’t live near one, you’re out of luck. (I will never tell you how far I traveled to buy this box of branded toaster pastries — which, I will note cost me $2.69 a box.)

How movies fell in love with chain restaurants (and vice versa)…

While the ties between the movie and the food industry really took off in earnest in the 1970s, there are some scattered examples of cross-promotions that predated that time period. As noted by Discontinued Foods, food brands were looking to capitalize on pop culture trends— and vice versa — as early as the days of radio serials.

By the 1960s, breakfast cereals featured popular Hanna-Barbera television cartoon characters like Yogi Bear on their boxes, a precursor to our modern world of Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles. Cartoon and comic heroes quickly proved a dependable way to attract kids to products —even ones they might otherwise turn up their noses at. By the 1960s, Allens sold Popeye Spinach, named after the popular sailor man from comic strips and theatrical shorts, and inspired by his own love of the power-packing leafy vegetable. The product is still offered on supermarket shelves today.
