10 Knocked Up
Platform: Netflix | Minutes Watched: 227,000,000
Director: Judd Apatow | Cast: Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd
You know how they say, opposites attract! Knocked Up is a silly little rom-com that surprisingly packs a lot of tears. The movie introduces audiences to Ben Stone (Rogen), a laid-back stoner who runs an inappropriate website cataloging nude scenes in movies. On the other hand, Allison Scott (Heigl) is a polished on-air reporter for E!, living in a fancy suite and fresh off a promotion. To celebrate, she hits the club with her sister Debbie (Leslie Mann) and ends up meeting Ben. One drink after another, the two start hitting off, only to end up hooking up later on.
Like any other one-night stand, Allison wakes up in the morning regretting her decision. But the bigger surprise comes later. For the party-loving Ben, the real shocker comes eight weeks after their fling, when Allison shows up at his door, pregnant. Deciding to keep the baby, Ben and Allison learn to face their pregnancy and raise their future child. But before they can raise a family, the two adults have some growing up to do. Despite Knocked Up’s simple plot, Rogen and Heigl’s chemistry brings both heart and humor to the table, making it a movie that’s more than just laughs.

8 Moana
Platform: Disney+ | Minutes Watched: 238,000,000
Director: John Musker, Ron Clements | Cast: Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House
Set against the crystal-clear blue waters of the Polynesian islands, Moana tells the story of the adventurous teen Moana Waialiki (Cravalho) on a mission to heal her island. As the chief’s only daughter in a long line of navigators, Moana has always been drawn to the sea. Trouble arises when the islanders can’t catch any fish or harvest crops, and Moana discovers that the mighty demigod Maui (Johnson) stole the heart of the goddess Te Fiti. Setting sail on an epic journey across the Pacific, Moana sets out to restore the island and fulfill her destiny.
While Moana features its classic Disney elements, the movie stands out with breathtaking island visuals and a young, morally complex who has a lot to learn about herself. The film balances childlike warmth with emotional moments that resonate with adults without feeling forced or cheesy. Plus, there’s a live-action remake of Moana reportedly in the works!

7 Glass
Platform: Netflix | Minutes Watched: 252,000,000
Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Cast: James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sarah Paulson, Samuel L. Jackson
Set two years after Split and nearly 20 years before Unbreakable, Glass sees the return of the misunderstood hero David Dunn (Willis), also known as “The Overseer.” This superhuman vigilante, who can see the crimes people have committed, uses his abilities to track down Kevin Wendell Crumb (McAvoy), a man with twenty-four personalities. Enter Dr. Ellie Staple (Paulson), a mysterious psychiatrist who tries to convince David that he’s just an ordinary person experiencing grand delusions about himself.
Though the film’s ending might feel underwhelming to certain audiences, Shyamalan twists the superhero genre in Glass in a subversive manner. The director deconstructs what makes a hero, which in this case isn’t necessarily about their superhuman abilities or costumes, but rather the questionable principles the characters impose on themselves and others.

6 The Bricklayer
Platform: Netflix | Minutes Watched: 320,000,000
Director: Renny Harlin | Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Nina Dobrev, Tim Blake Nelson
Disillusionized with espionage, CIA field agent Steve Vail (Eckhart) trades his covert career for the simple labor of bricklaying. But when three international journalists are murdered, Vail is pulled back into the CIA to track down Victor Radek (Clifton Collins Jr.), a rogue former asset blaming the agency for the deaths. Joined by junior agent Kate (Dobrev), Vail races to capture Radek and present a national security breach. Based on Noah Boyd’s novel, The Bricklayer sees Vail take this opportunity to clear the agency’s name and address his shady past.
The Bricklayer doesn’t actually introduce new ideas to the already over-saturated CIA spy narrative. Featuring cheap-looking production, the neither offers punchy action sequences nor explores the characters’ questionable motives. However, The Bricklayer serves a few witty lines and moments of suspense here and there to keep viewers entertained.

5 Wish
Platform: Disney+ | Minutes Watched: 388,000,000
Director: Chris Buck, Fawn Veerasunthorn | Cast: Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk
In Disney’s Wish, Asha (DeBose), a lively 17-year-old in the mystical kingdom of Rosas, discovers a dark shadow looming over King Magnifico (Pine). Following a life-altering encounter with the ruler, Asha turns to the heavens in a plea for direction, prompting the aid of Star, a celestial entity with the power to grant wishes. Together, Asha and Star form a connection, setting out on a quest to confront the growing threats endangering Rosas.
While Wish has its endearing moments, it has flaws in terms of its plot, characters, and a random villain that doesn’t mix well with the movie. Rosas’s “awkward and quirky” personality may have charmed audiences at first, but its usage ultimately felt forced throughout the plot. Nevertheless, Wish’s main themes of rebellion against authority and power unity serve as the film’s saving grace.
