One of my problems with AI isn’t the hallucinations, but how boring those hallucinations are. I want Hunter-Thompson-on-illicit-substances visions and what I get are mumbles from an incompetent, prejudiced CPA with too little sleep. I am happy to announce that ChatGPT and Google took big steps towards meeting my needs this week.
ChatGPT kicked things off by giving a trippy response to a Redditor’s request for recommendations for recordings by the Bill Evans Trio. On the OpenAI community forum, a user got a response written in either Spanish and Ilocano (the Philippines’ third most spoken language) or in Spanish and English.
Meanwhile, the image generator of Google’s Gemini began generating images of people where the race was wrong while not being racist imagery. That’s a big step forward for AI, IMOP. In one instance, a Viking was portrayed as a Native American in Viking garb.
Another image came dangerously close to art when it showed an Asian woman and an African man dressed in World War II German Army uniforms. Is it an assertion of humanity? Does it say that there are some symbols or ideas that can never be re-contextualized? These and other questions are undoubtedly coming to a semiotics class soon.
