f you’re like most healthy humans, it’s impossible to be upbeat and without problems 24/7. But some individuals seem happy all the time, annoying the grumpy ones who don’t see any reason why. These are two extremes of the human spectrum. Then there’s most of us who sit in between depending on how our day goes.
While we are advised to sit with our feelings for a bit, especially after a bad experience, staying moody for prolonged periods has its fair share of toxicity. At some point, we will have to stand up, breathe, and ward off the negative vibe. While we can’t control what kind of curveball life throws, we can determine if it has the power to penetrate our hearts and spoil our moods. This is why it’s important to learn how to get rid of a bad mood, especially on days when moving on is inevitable.
Here’s how to get rid of a bad mood as fast as it comes…
#1. Know the why
First, understand what triggered your bad mood. Awareness can help you address the root of the issue. To solve any problem, you must first know the reason it started. If not, it will be a cyclic case of fixing the effects while ignoring the cause.
#2. Breathe
Practice deep, slow breathing to calm your nervous system and reduce stress. Sometimes, if we can take the time to hold ourselves back from reacting, and just breathe, we cleanse the colored lenses and see the situations better.
#3. Move around
Go for a walk, jog, or engage in any form of exercise. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve your mood. If you work remotely, set a time to go outside and touch some grass. Don’t underestimate the power of physical activities as it helps the body and mind retain balance.
#4. Listen to music
Choose uplifting or calming sounds to shift your mood. Music has a powerful impact on emotions. One minute, you’re crying and regurgitating a heartbreaking experience, and with one song, you start feeling grateful for life. So when next you’re slumped in a bad mood, leverage your playlist to the max.

Speak to someone you trust about the situation. Sharing your feelings can be therapeutic, and a problem shared is a problem half-solved. When talking it out, choose people who align with your values and have empathy; not someone who will force you to snap out of it or hoard the truth from you.

When you feel bad, reflect on the positive aspects of your life. Gratitude can shift your focus away from negativity. Simply put, stop focusing on the goals left unmet on your list, but magnify the wins and let gratitude well up from inside.

Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it’s reading, drawing, or any hobby that brings you joy. Take a break from technology and social media. A digital detox can reduce information overload and stress. If you are easily drained by activities, create solitary times for resting and reflecting on life. It helps recharge and get rid of a bad mood.

Drink water and have a nutritious snack. Dehydration and low blood sugar can contribute to irritability. Cut back on alcohol, quit smoking, eat fruits and vegetables, and opt for a healthier lifestyle. Some foods and drinks affect our moods negatively, so cut them off and watch your mind transcend to a better state.
#11. Be conscious
Step outside for fresh air or rearrange your surroundings. A change of scenery can positively impact your mood. Be kind to yourself. Understand that everyone has challenging moments, and it’s okay to feel down sometimes.
