Abrams found enormous success on television, creating, writing, and producing a series of critically acclaimed shows including the college drama ‘Felicity,’ the spy thriller ‘Alias,’ and the hugely popular mystery ‘Lost.’ While he continued working in television, developing shows like ‘Fringe’ and ‘Person of Interest,’ Abrams also moved back to film, where he became one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. He’s worked on the ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Star Trek,’ and ‘Star Wars’ franchises, and paid homage to director Steven Spielberg with the surburban sci-fi picture ‘Super 8.’ He’s famous for his love of “mystery boxes,” the idea that audiences are fascinated by secrets and surprises, and he markets his movies accordingly. “,”post_count”:402,”link_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/j-j-abrams/”,”feed_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/j-j-abrams/feed/”,”term_taxonomy_id”:419,”object_id”:0},{“id”:6570,”slug”:”john-boyega”,”title”:”John Boyega”,”description”:””,”post_count”:119,”link_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/john-boyega/”,”feed_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/john-boyega/feed/”,”term_taxonomy_id”:6591,”object_id”:0},{“id”:5542,”slug”:”oscar-isaac”,”title”:”Oscar Isaac”,”description”:””,”post_count”:140,”link_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/oscar-isaac/”,”feed_url”:”//screencrush.com/tags/oscar-isaac/feed/”,”term_taxonomy_id”:5563,”object_id”:0},{“id”:464,”slug”:”star-wars”,”title”:”Star Wars”,”description”:”The ‘Star Wars’ film series is made up of two separate trilogies and has spawned an Expanded Universe that includes TV shows (‘Star Wars Rebels’), video games, books and comics. The franchise launched in May 25, 1977 when ‘Star Wars’, written and directed by George Lucas, was first released in theaters. It was followed by ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ closing out the original franchise. Sixteen years after the last of those films hit theaters, a new prequel trilogy began with the release of ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’. It was followed by ‘Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’. In 2012, Lucas sold the rights to the ‘Star Wars’ franchise to Disney who announced a new, sequel trilogy. The first film, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, was directed by J.J. Abrams and opened in theaters in 2015. The next, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ is directed by Rian Johnson and opens in the winter of 2017. I’ll remember that date — December 18, 2015 — as long as I live. It wasn’t just the day J.J. Abrams’The Force Awakensopened in multiplexes around the world. It was also myoldest daughter’s due date. Thankfully, my daughter waited to arrive until December 21, so it all worked out — for me, at least. For Lucasfim andits new corporate overlords at Disney, the return ofStar Warswas a bit more complicated. The Force Awakens itselfwas an unqualified triumph; people forget that it’s still thesinglehighest-grossing film in the history of the U.S. box office. ($936.6 million — roughly $150 million more than the firstAvatar.)

The reason they tend to forget that is because two years later Rian Johnson’sStar Wars: The Last Jedifollowed, andproved so divisive that Disney and Lucasfilm then brought back Abrams to conclude the trilogy (and ignore some of the changes madeby Johnson in The Last Jedi) in 2019’sStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That sequel, in turn, proved so unpopular that it basically soured all of fandomonStar Warsmovies in the short-term. WatchingThe Force Awakensten years later, it’s impossible tocompletely separate the film from the controversial chapters that followed. Yes, the film closely follows the structural blueprint of George Lucas’ 1977Star Wars. It’s got a trio of young heroes in a battle with a villain clad in black and his vast army of Stormtroopers. Yes, there is an all-important MacGuffin robot stranded on a remote dessert planet. Yes, there are wise older heroes to impart wisdom and guidance to the new generation. Yes, there is a giant space station shaped like amoon that shoots world-breaking lasers. Yes, the female character gets kidnapped and yes the rest of the heroes rescue her and yes, the older member of their party dies in the process, and yes, the good guys succeed in destroying the giant space station, giving hope to their little galactic rebellion.

Okay, when you put it like that,The Force Awakens is pretty close to the firstStar Wars. The reason it works anyway isbecause those familiar beatswork in concert withAbrams’ ultimate goal: Crafting an unabashed love letter to vintageStar Wars. Lucas’prequel films of the late 1990s and early 2000s presented a high-gloss, heavily digitizedupdate of the franchise. They were visually impressive — and totally antiseptic. For better or for worse, Disney’ssequel trilogy was the first generation ofStar Warsmovies made byStar Warsfans. Thatexcitement for the franchise is pretty infectious, especially in the film’s early scenes. The Force Awakens still looks very good for a ten year old movie, perhaps because Abrams emphasized practical sets, costumes, and droids wherever and however he could. There are more long takes in the movie than I remembered, and they mostlyemphasize the magical nature ofStar Wars —like when the camera lingers on a bowl as Rey dumps inone-quarter portion of food from Unkar Plutt. The concoction stirs, fizzles, settles, then somehow morphs into a grubby green-brown roll, all without a single cut.

All that giddiness dissipates in the third act, which includesthebuzzkillmurder of (ten-year-old spoiler alert) Han Solo by Kylo Ren. Death is an intrinsic part ofStar Wars, and inThe Last JediLuke Skywalker offers the poignant observation that “no one’s ever really gone” in their world — a point underlined by Harrison Ford’s brief appearance as Han’s ghost inThe Rise of Skywalker. But, again, watched on its own,Kylo killing Handoes sort of suck all the air out of the film. The Force Awakens’whole visualpalette darkens at that moment, and it only gets a little brighter in its epilogue, when Rey finds the long-missing Luke and tries to coax him back into the Resistance by offering him his father’s lightsaber.

Here is why I love this poster even though the title font is a little hard to read: Because the title font is a little hard to read. It makes you sit there and stare for a minute as you suss out the letters in Bugonia. While you do, the image of a bald Emma Stone covered with … is it wax? Is it blood? Is both? … is working its way into your brain. And once it does that, you just don’t forget it. And I feel pretty confident that long after a lot of the details of Bugonia fade from my mind, I will be able to describe this poster from memory.
