Continuing to deliver modern takes on archival silhouettes, the footwear offering features six styles that lean into unique takes on iconics styles mixed with new hybrids. First up, the TRX Mesh SPZL sees the label dip into the archive and subtly reinterpret the classic TRX for the modern moment. They maintain the bold blue/ yellow colourways of the iconic original, while redefining the shoe with a reworked upper pattern. Next, the Handball Cup SPZL marries iconic handball styles from the mid 80s to create a new shoe that feels appropriate to that period. Using the 1983 Handball Spezial (along with their classic blue/white colourway) as the foundation, the Handball Cup SPZLs built in a swooping leather overlay below the collar that is synonymous with the Handball Top. This overlay is called out with a pop of red alongside features such a ‘dimple’ white tongue, soft suede upper and a gum rubber outsole.

The Failsworth SPZL, meanwhile, continues the collection’s recontextualised spirit as it draws on the little known ad`idas Barbados silhouette as its starting point. The shoe takes a low profile suede construction complete with a T-toe that was inspired by a pair of vintage adidas Universal SL. The shoes muted colour palette is complemented by chocolate brown tongue branding used on various vintage ‘Made in France’ models. Another low- profile remix. The Roelee SPZL is the successor of the adidas Whalley SPZL. This new hybrid style uses the foxing details of the Gazelle SPZL mixed with the upper of the Whalley SPZL featuring a T- Toe construction whose extended overlay runs through to the heel.
The Pampanga SPZL takes its name from the province in the Philippines as the shoe uses the very rare archival Made in Philippines adidas Squire as its starting point. The shoe recreates the vintage outsole of the adidas Squire whilst the upper is overhauled with a new pattern and tighter toebox.
This season’s take on adidas’s history in court shoes is a new hybrid called the A Aspden SPZL. The shoe takes its lead from the adidas Las Palmas (one of adidas’s few archival tennis styles that use the Hawaii tooling) whilst the upper and tongue takes cues from other 70s court styles. The SPZL design team were looking to use a signature to ensure this modern hybrid was further in keeping with the look of shoes from that period but this posed a challenge as to whose signature to use as these are a new lifestyle shoe rather than the signature shoe of a sportsperson. A decision was made to use the signature of Gary Aspden’s late father as a familial tribute. His father was a tradesman (a hand engraver whose work revolved around the use of fonts) with distinctive handwriting and signature that fitted well with the shoe’s overall look along with the era that inspired them.
Turning from footwear to apparel, adidas SPZL’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection is a further extension of the apparel design language that has been established with the SPZL range over the past decade.
Headlining the collection is the Halewood SPZL Parka with its lightweight nylon construction and large tonal embroidered back logo – coming in two colour options – forest green and black. Following on, the Billinge SPZL Hoodie, Brockhall SPZL Tee, and Mod SPZL tee are all crafted with the label’s quintessential stylistic sensibilities at heart. The Hudswell SPZL Jacket and Shorts, meanwhile, take sporting style and reconstitute it with ripstop fabrics. The Salesbury SPZL Trousers offer a relaxed, tapered fit with zip pockets and a half cuff. The Wardour SPZL Vest completes the selection. Taking the pocket construction of the sought after Wardour jacket into a sleeveless gilet with a tonal ‘Mod Trefoil’ print on the back, it makes for a solid Spring layering piece.
The accessories offering comprises the ST10 SPZL Bag (based on the colour palette and materialisation of the iconic ST rain jackets), with complimentary ST10 SPZL Hip Bag, the white Mod Trefoil SPZL Cap, and a twin pack of Mod Trefoil SPZL Socks.
Drawing on adidas’ inimitable heritage, the collection’s unique styles are brought to life through a carefully considered campaign starring British actor and long time adidas SPZL supporter James Nelson Joyce.
